K.Madhu’s latest offering ‘Rahasya Police’ doesn’t come up to your expectations, especially expectations about a K.Madhu brand of thriller. The climax of course has been worked out in true K.Madhu style, but the film as a whole won’t impress you. There are a lot of flaws that mar the totality of the film. ‘Rahasya Police’ takes us to a village where there is a small police station. It’s here that our hero, S.I Rajan (Jayaram) works, assisted by constables including Arjunan (Harisree Ashokan), Raveendran (Indrans) etc. Things take off after Bhadra, who is a friend to Rajan’s sister Manikutty, is found dead. Parambaththu Raju (Ganesh Kumar), who is a neighbour to Bhadra and whose sister too is Bhadra’s friend, is arrested on charges of murdering Bhadra. Rajan begins his investigation. And then pops in Chala Mani (Jayaram), a look alike of Rajan, who is a goon and who wants to get Raju out of bars. The film then picks up momentum.

Performances

Jayaram does the dual roles in his characteristic style, but of course at places his performance, especially as the cop, misses the mark and doesn’t impress us. Jagathy Sreekumar, Indrans, Harisree Ashokan, Suraaj Venjaramoodu, Riyaz Khan, Mala Aravindan etc have done their respective characters in their respective styles. Nothing outstanding to mention at all about these artists. Samvritha Sunil has nothing to do at all.

Technical aspects

The cinematography (Venugopalan), the editing (P.C.Mohanan) and the art-direction (Sajith Highness) are in tune with the mood of the film and seems to be average on the whole.

Music

The background score by Rajamani syncs well with the tune and is typical of Rajamani.

Script

The script by S.N.Swami, who has scripted many taut thrillers teaming up with K.Madhu, is not up to the mark this time. He has worked out the climax excellently well, but many scenes in the first half seem to test your patience, especially if you expect to see a K.Madhu-S.N.Swami brand of thriller. The result is that the film doesn’t impress you on the whole though there are portions, especially towards the end, that hold your attention.

Direction

K.Madhu seems to have done ‘Rahasya Police’ with a detached mentality. The film lacks those many ingredients that a K.Madhu film is supposed to have, though there are scenes that are conceived and executed in true K.Madhu fashion. But such scenes are few and the film fails to impress you on the whole.

Overall verdict- Just so so.

‘Winter’, director Dipu’s debut film (his second ‘Crazy Gopalan’ had been released earlier), is in fact nothing new, theme-wise. A psychopath on a killing spree, specializing in slitting the throats of little kids, gets killed as his car crashes during a hot chase by the cops. Years later, a doctor, his wife and two kids (one of them with some unexplained psychological disorder) comes to stay in the very same bungalow where the psychopath stayed and which at present is reportedly haunted by his ghost. And then a series of eerie happenings moving towards an unexpected climax. This is the story in a nutshell; and it’s to be pointed out that ‘Winter’ is no ghost movie, though it’s made like one.
Coming to the review part, the first question that looks you in the face is- Why and for whom did Dipu make the movie? ‘Winter’ is taut, slick and pacy. It’s technically brilliant. The story is narrated brilliantly. The performances are all good. But what does Dipu want to convey through the movie? It seems there is an element of confusion there. Still, the film is definitely worth a watch, for it’s got more of plusses than minuses.
Performances
Jayaram and Bhavana (playing Dr. Ramdas and his wife Shyama) have done full justice to their roles. Vijayakumar, as ACP Saju, is his very usual self while Manoj.K.Jayan is good and so is T.G.Ravi. Vijeesh is his usual self.
Technical aspects
‘Winter’, made four years back, is technically brilliant. Cinematography, by Ramakrishna Gummidi, is simply excellent. And so is the editing by Arun Kumar is good. It’s the sound-mixing that stands out as far as the technical aspects are concerned.
Music
The background score by Benny, though of the usual kind, suits the mood and the tempo of the film. The only song, written by Anil Panachooran and set to tune by Rajakrishnan, too is good.
Script
It’s the script that proves to be the main villain as far as the film’s totality is concerned. Director Dipu himself has penned the story, screenplay and dialogues for ‘Winter’ and it’s to be said that the story indeed is fine, with the writer not bothering to give explanations to each and every aspect, which if done could have made the proceedings intolerable. The dialogues are also good. But on the screenplay side, Dipu could have sought the help of someone else too and made it a bit different. There are scenes that could have been avoided (like the doorbell ringing too often, making the audience laugh rather than get startled), scenes that could have been worked better so as not to seem clichéd.
Direction
It’s the direction that stands out as one of the major highlights of ‘Winter’. As director, Dipu is in full control of things and has crafted the movie well. Every scene, every shot is canned well, though many could have been conceived better (that’s the screenplay side anyhow). Hats off to the young director!

Overall verdict- Worth a watch!

Santosh Sivan said, "I will start the film Ceylon by November after I complete my assignment as cameraman in Mani Ratnam’s Raavan. The film is basically on the plight of refugees from Sri Lanka who have been displaced from their land due to the domestic war. But it is not a bio-pic about the slain LTTE leader V. Prabhakaran."

Bomb Blast in Kochi Collectorate,Kerala

Kochi/Thiruvananthapuram : A high alert was sounded across Kerala and security beefed up after an explosion at the Kochi collectorate building on Friday evening was identified as a pipe bomb blast.

The explosion took place around 1510 hrs (IST) in the staircase leading to the fifth floor of the building. Initially it was thought to be a fire that broke out but later forensic experts inspecting the site found that that it was a pipe bomb and identified a timer, ammonium nitrate and batteries.

A man near the spot suffered minor injuries in the blast.

State Revenue Minister KP Rajendran who rushed to the site said that a high level inquiry would be ordered.

After the forensic experts identified explosive materials, state Director General of Police Jacob Punnoose asked all the 14 district superintendents of police to maintain a high vigil. He left for Kochi himself.

Mammootty's Kuutisrank under the axe

The Kollam sub court has issued orders against some scenes of Mammootty's flick "Kuttyshranku" directed by Shaji N Karun. A petition was filed by AR Chandrasekhara Kurup and other family members of the Azhakathu family in whose 'Kalari' and 'Sarpakavu' some of the scenes of the movie were shot. According to the petition the scenes shot at the place have hurt their religious sentiments and hence wanted the scenes to be removed. The court after enquiring into the petition has ruled in their favor and has asked for the deletion of the scenes from the movie.

Story:
A tale that could have been better, the story is set on the backdrop of a circus that is being run by Krishnettan (Innocent). He picks up an orphan Jimmy (Mammootty) and soon he along with another lad Sisupalan (suraj) become the dare devil bikers of the troupe. The story takes a turn when Jimmy rescues few other street children like him from the clutches of the beggar mafia and they join him in the circus troupe. Soon they make progress and also join the big Jumbo circus troupe. However, Jimmy is framed into a case and arrested by the police and he is sent jail. Just when the children are worried where they would go, a ghost arrives (Mammootty) and he begins to help the kids and also fights the villains. There is also Ancy (kavya) who happens to be the love interest of Jimmy and the daughter of the owner of Jumbo Circus. Whether Jimmy comes out of jail and what happens after that forms the rest of the story.

Presentation:
The director has attempted to come up with a light hearted treat but then the narrative also ended up becoming light. The presentation was somewhat above average with good graphics, the dialogues were plain, the script was standard and the screenplay was just suitable. Music could not do much except for one number and the cinematography was good. Editing was a bit unstable at few points. Mammoottty carried out his role with elegance as Jimmy but then he should have worked on his voice for the ghost character. Kavya is looking lusciously beautiful and the real show stealer was Suraj with his comedy. Jagathy was regular, Innocent was neat. The others made their presence felt in their own way.

Conclusion:
The film could have been a lot better if the makers had focused on the content part of it and gave it more twists. While the first half goes about with the elements of comedy and action, the second half also runs somewhat on similar lines but then it fails to engage the audience. This was meant to be a treat for the kids and there is sufficient graphical work involved in it. Though the hype has been high, the film was not that captivating to make it a super hit, it might just scrape if there is a positive word of mouth.

Malayalam superstar Mammootty's upcoming Malayalam film Ee Pattanathil Bhootham is directed by Johny Antony of CID Moosa, Kochi Raajaavu and Thuruppugulaan fame. As the name suggests, Ee Pattanathil Bhootham is a fantasy-filled adventure, donning Mammootty in a double role as a bike jumper named Jimmy in a circus company and a friendly ghost! The film has been scripted by Siby K. Thomas and Udayakrishnan, the hit pair of blockbuster Twenty:20.

The story revolves around an orphan Jimmy brought up by Krishnettan (Innocent), who runs a street circus group. Jimmy rescues a couple of street children from some goons and they become part of the street circus group, which is later merged with a commercial circus company, run by Philipose (Janaradhanan) and his daughter Ancy (Kavya Madhavan), a management graduate. While Jimmy is away, the kids again run into some trouble. However, they are rescued by a ghost who only they can see. The film develops from this point.

Creations, the film has cinematography by Azhagappan and music by debutant music director Shaan Rahman. Kavya Madhavan has already appeared in six films with Mammootty, but never as his heroine. Meena Durairaj, known as Meena,(born September 16,1976 in Chennai,is a Tamil film and television actress. Meena debuted as a child artist in Tamil films and has later starred in films produced by various regional industries. She is one of the most established actresses in the southern Indian film industry.

Acting Career
Meena started her career in 1982 as a child artist in the film Nenjangal, featuring Dr Sivaji Ganesan in the lead role, after Ganesan saw her at a birthday party. She says of Ganesan that "I feel extremely proud to have been discovered by the legend.".

She made her debut in Tamil in Oru Pudiya Kadhai, and also stars in Telugu and Kannada films. Her first role in Malayalam that gained attention was in Santhwanam. Meena has expressed a wish to do more films in Malayalam.She says of her transition from being a child star to being a heroine that "Memories as a child are really fabulous and I still cherish them. And it is still more special as that phase is over. Now, I am enjoying my stint as a heroine."

She has played the role of leading heroines in Tamil and Telagu films since the early 90s, often playing characters without negativity or grey shades. Ambazhathil Karunakaran Lohithadas (A. K. Lohithadas) (10 May 1955 – 28 June 2009) was a prolific screenwriter and director in Malayalam cinema, known for his rich, detailed, and realistic screenplays.

Biography

Lohithadas (or 'Lohi', he is often referred to) was born on 10 May 1955 in Chalakudy, Kerala. He showed an initial interest was in short-stories, but failed to make a mark in that genre. He soon moved into Malayalam theater in 1986 when his debut script was accepted for the stage by the legendary theater personality Thoppil Bhasi. Bhasi's CPI party backed drama troupe, the highly successful 'Kerala People's Arts Club', produced the play, leading to a state award for Lohithadas.

Fresh with the play's commercial and critical success, Lohithadas moved to Malayalam Cinema by writing for director Sibi Malayil. His first movie screenplay Thaniavarthanam was directed by Malayil and went on to be a success. The Sibi Malayil-Lohithadas combination would later produce several memorable Malayalam movies. On June 28, 2009, he came to Kochi to attend the general body meet of AMMA in the morning, developed uneasiness and was immediately taken to the Lisy Hospital where he was declared dead from a heart attack at 10:50 AM

Kochi: Noted Malayalam movie director A K Lohithadas passed away at Ernakulam Lissy Hospital at 11 am here on Sunday . According to sources, Lohitadas suffered a heart attack, which led to the sudden demise. Lohithadas was in Kochi to attend the general body meeting of AMMA, later admitted to hospital due to physical discomfort.His wife and children were in hospital at the time of his death. He soon moved into Malayalam theater in 1986 when his debut script was accepted for the stage by the legendary theater personality Thoppil Bhasi. Bhasi's CPI party backed drama troupe, the highly successful 'Kerala People's Arts Club', produced the play, leading to a state award for Lohithadas.

Fresh with the play's commercial and critical success, Lohithadas moved to Malayalam Cinema by writing for director Sibi Malayil. His first movie screenplay Thaniavarthanam was directed by Malayil and went on to be a success. The Sibi Malayil-Lohithadas combination would later produce several memorable Malayalam movies.

Lohithdas movies are well known for its deep and realistic characterization and are often grim depiction of contemporary Kerala life. In spite of its serious subjects, they have been highly successful in the state. His movies lay less emphasis on plot or commercial gimmicks and, instead, display a more character-oriented approach. He is a prolific writer, often writing nearly four screenplays a year. He turned director with his critically acclaimed 1997 film Bhoothakannadi (The Magnifying Glass).

Other than Bhoothakannadi he directed movies like Kanmadham, Ormacheppu, Arayannangalude Veedue, Chakram, Joker, Kasthooriman, Chakkaramuthu and Nivedhyam . He is the script writer of noted films like Thaniyavarthanam, Kireedom, Chenkol, Sallapam, Amaram, Thoovalkottaram, Ormacheppu, Joker, Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal, Bharatham, Dasaratham , Kamaladalam, Valsalyam, His Highness Abdullah,Vengalam, Valayam etc.

The film Bhoothakannadi won him the 45th National Film Award for Best film in 1997. Other awards inlcude Kerala State Film Award for Best Story - Thaniyavarthanam, 1987, Kerala State Film Award for Best Film - Bhoothakannadi (1997) , Tamil Nadu State Film Award for 2nd Best Film-Kasthooriman. The filmi duniya and IPL have become two faces of the same coin. After Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Shilpa Shetty, now Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and filmmaker Priyadarshan are all set to float a brand new Kerala IPL team.

Though the dotted line is far from being signed, fans are already hollering for actress Asin, the team’s brand ambassador.
Anupriya, a student, says: “Asin will be the perfect choice because as a young Keralite, she embodies the rising aspirations of youngsters in the state. Also, she is glamourous.”

Blessy has stamped his signature on Bhramaram. A simple story, lots of emotions, fabulous frames and some haunting moments. Still, in the end, it is the power packed performance from Mohanlal that turns out to be the real strength of the film.

The story begins when a visibly unkempt Sivankutty (Mohanlal) reaches the apartment of his schoolmate, Unni (Suresh Menon). Though Unni fails to remember him clearly, the stranger who introduces himself as Jose, becomes friendly with his kid. The mood takes some abrupt turns from then on as his real identity is revealed after a while.

Unni, now a successful share broker and his close pal Alex, a doctor, studied in the same school with Jose (well, we're not playing spoilsports and revealing more), who is now a jeep driver. To their horror, Unni and Alex soon realize that his actual name was not Jose. They were all part of a tragic incident and now all on a sudden, he had come there with an agenda.

The film has its moments for sure, but things could have definitely been more effective with a taut script as at times it drags. Though Mohanlal puts in his heart and soul to get into the shoes of his character, the supporting cast lets him down big time. What makes the film click is it’s stunning climax

Bhoomika, as Mohanlal's wife and the child actor who played their kid fails to make any impact. Some of the characters played by Bollywood comedian Suresh Menon, Bhoomika and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy could have been more effective with better dubbing. Muralikrishnan, who plays Alex, has nice features to suit his role and he does a nice job as well.

Among the best things about the film is the cinematography by Ajayan Vincent that adds to the mood of the story in a huge way. The music of Mohan Sithara, is melodious especially Mohanlal’s Annarakanna… song which is another highlight of the film. The action scenes, though at times created just for the heck of it, have been taken pretty well.

Bhramaram continues to haunt you even after you come out of the theatre after watching it. Of course, it also makes you think about its merits and shortcomings. Now, how many films that came out during recent times succeed in doing that? Go 4 it : Credit - Sify

Priyadarsan, Mohanlal to Start an IPL team

Last week, Priyadarsan was in his hometown of Thiruvananthapuram on a mission

He is planning to start a cricket team from Kerala for the next IPL season in 2010, with childhood friend and Malayalam superstar Mohanlal.

“During our school and college days, we had a cricket team, City Cricketers, for which I used to open the innings; Mohanlal was the all rounder and pinch hitter. Some of our team members played in the Ranji Trophy for Kerala, while others got into Malayalam film industry,” says Priyadarsan getting nostalgic.
Now, he is working towards his dream of having an IPL team from Kerala, with the tacit support of the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA), affiliated to BCCI, which is looking to add more teams to the premier T-20 tournament.

Says Mohanlal, “We’re trying to nurture local talent, as the most successful IPL players this year have been little known guys like Manish Pandey, Pragyan Ojha, and Kamran Khan. There are a lot of youngsters in the small towns of Kerala and Tamil Nadu waiting to get a break. They have the talent, but lack exposure and world class training facilities.”

“Thanks to Shah Rukh Khan, we were able to send five promising lads — Mohammed Niaz, Mohammed Sanuth, Rohan Prem, P Prashanth and teenage batting sensation Sanju V Samson — to attend the selection trials of the Kolkata Knight Riders. They might not have made it to the team, but they got to see how international players train and the exposure has helped them,” adds Priyadarsan.

The duo has roped in Shashi Tharoor, the Thiruvananthapuram MP and the new Union Minister of State for External Affairs as chairman of their team, to be called City Cricketers.

Two NRIs and a few corporates are willing to fund the project which will cost around Rs 250 crore. The team will have its own state-of-the-art cricket stadium near Kovalam. Former Indian player and fielding coach Robin Singh has been signed as the technical director.

“The KCA will approach the BCCI with our proposal, and if all goes well, we will start our IPL innings next year,” concludes Priyadarsan.

Nayanthara denies.Plans to lodge a complaint

Nayanthara denied reports that she married choreographer-actor-director Prabhu Deva.Nayan presently camping in Thiruvalla in Kerala with her parents, said that she would fly down to Chennai on June 13th and disclose other details.

Dileep’s brother Anoop has turned producer with Papi Appacha. Anoop has been helping Dileep in all his Grand Production and Manjunatha Films work.

Papi Appacha features Dileep and Innocent in an out and out comedy caper, which will also have a new girl as the heroine. The film is being directed by Mamas Chandran and the shoot will start shortly.

Remember Papi Appacha was a famous song sung by Adoor Bhasi in an old 1970 Malayalam film? The film is likely to be Dileep’s Christmas release

Nikhita replaces Padmapriya in Daddy Cool

Padmapriya who was supposed to do a special appearance in Mammootty’s Daddy Cool has not walked out due to date problem.

Padmapriya has suddenly become busy in Tamil and now Nikhita has stepped into the role. Nikhita who has done films like Kaiyethum Doorathu, Bus Conductor and Moonam Khandam has become hot with the recent Tamil hit Saroja.

A song is being picturised this week on Nikhita, Mammootty and Daniel Balaji at Poombatta floor in Thammanam.

Prithviraj in I Have A Dream

Pradeep Nair of Oridam fame is back with a new subject and new characters. His new movie titled I Have A Dream with Prithviraj as the lead hero is evocative of a historical legend and its associated myths. However the director claims to showcase a thriller which will be based on Martin Luther King's famous historical speech along those lines.

His debut venture Oridam had won rave reviews at many Festivals and other cultural meets. The filmmaker is trying on the garb of versatility by indulging in a wide variety of themes. If Oridam with Geethu Mohandas in the lead role addressed the concerns of the street prostitutes, then I Have A Dream will make a difference with its historical threads. This movie will have two heroines and they are yet to be decided.
